International Impact from the Magnify Tool Cohort
Global Cohort
Global Treehouse is proud to share the quality improvement impacts achieved by five providers who participated in the Magnify Tool cohort. The Magnify Tool is a customisable resource designed to help children’s palliative care providers and teams effectively explore and use their service data and information. It was co-created through user design with over 60 contributors from more than 20 countries, representing six continents, ensuring its relevance and applicability across diverse settings.
Children’s palliative care providers from six countries make meaningful quality improvements to their practice, shared in this new compilation of case studies:
The international cohort was established as a six-month initiative for international children’s palliative care practitioners. Supported by Global Treehouse Practice Lead Erin Das, participants focused on utilising the Magnify Tool to interpret their data and initiate quality improvements. Each team collaborated internally, using the tool to highlight their service's strengths while also identifying areas for enhancing data collection or utilisation. These teams then put their plans into action, sharing their results and insights with the rest of the cohort.
Quality Improvement Outcomes
Here are some highlights of the incredible work led by our cohort participants:
Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice (BACCH) & Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospital (KACCH), Kuwait
BACCH and KACCH streamlined their data collection from multiple sources, establishing a systematic method for cleaning calendar data to track service utilisation and operational efficiency. This has provided a foundation for future quality improvement projects, enhancing care and informing service reviews and reporting. Read the case study from BACCH and KACCH.
Living Room International, Kenya
Living Room International developed and implemented a children's palliative care family feedback survey to systematically gather insights into the care they provide, as well as its quality and impact. This initiative revealed strengths, such as family-reported holistic pain management, and identified key areas for improvement, including the need to collect ongoing feedback from families and to address language barriers in subsequent surveys. Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), Scotland
CHAS addressed a gap in their data regarding frequent appointment cancellations, which impacted their ability to offer respite and end-of-life stays for families. By analysing cancellation sources, seasonality, and reasons, CHAS can now present accurate data to decision-makers to help with resource allocation and inform service-level decisions. Read the case study from CHAS.
Paedspal, South Africa
Paedspal focused on improving staff wellbeing, administering the Provider Quality of Life Compassion Satisfaction Survey and tracking patient workload. This revealed an unexpectedly moderate level of secondary trauma among staff, leading to a commitment to targeted individual counselling and the development of an organisation-wide staff wellbeing policy. Read the case study from Paedspal.
Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice
Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice addressed the challenge of low referral rates by surveying local referrers to understand the barriers and perceptions of hospice care. This revealed significant knowledge gaps and a strong call for more training and collaboration, providing crucial data to advocate for improved access to palliative support. Empowering Action
The experiences of these diverse providers demonstrate the profound impact of the Magnify Tool in empowering children's palliative care teams to harness their data for meaningful quality improvements. By fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making, we can collectively enhance the care provided to seriously ill children and their families worldwide.
